Jimmy Buffetts Greatest Hits Album Enters Top 10 for First Time Following His Death

Publish date: 2024-03-05

Also: Zach Bryan leads the albums chart for a second consecutive week with his self-titled country-rock set.

Zach Bryan has the No. 1 album in the United States for the second week in a row, while Jimmy Buffett‘s 1985 album launched to No. 4 following the performer’s death on Sept. 1 after a long battle with skin cancer.

Buffett’s “Songs You Know by Heart: Jimmy Buffett’s Greatest Hit(s),” narrowly surged onto the Billboard 200 at No. 100 in the year it was released. Now at No. 4, “Greatest Hit(s)” sold the equivalent of 52,000 albums in the latest tracking week (per Luminate) and is the country-laced pop singer’s 13th top 10-charting album. The set includes “Margaritaville,” Buffett’s only top 10-charting single (No. 8 in 1977).

Bryan’s self-titled sophomore set with Warner Records keeps its grip at No. 1 with 115,000 sales and a strong push in streaming. In the last week, Bryan earned his first Hot 100 No. 1 — his duet with Kacey Musgraves, “I Remember Everything” — and first No. 1 album while simultaneously appearing in the news over his brief arrest in Oklahoma for interfering with a traffic stop. He was also on the receiving end of social media criticism over high ticket prices for his 2024 “Quittin’ Time” tour which finds him returning to Ticketmaster — although not exclusively — after touring last year without using the controversial service.

Meanwhile, Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time,” Travis Scott’s “Utopia” and Taylor Swift’s “Midnights,” and SZA’s “SOS” — all former long-standing No. 1s — are on the list at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. The “Barbie” soundtrack is at No. 7, Peso Pluma’s “Génesis” is at No. 8 and both Swift and Wallen round out the top 10 with “Lover” at No. 9 and “Dangerous: The Double Album” at No. 10.

On the singles chart, Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red” climbed to No. 1 in its fifth week on the chart — it debuted at No. 15 in August — to become Doja’s second No. 1 single, following “Say So” with Nicki Minaj in 2020. It’s also the first rap song to lead the Hot 100 since Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” achieved the feat in 2022. It lifts to the summit powered by 32 million radio airplay audience impressions and 28 million streams.

And thanks to Doja’s sampling of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By,” late songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David also top the Hot 100. Bacharach died on Feb. 8, and counting “Paint the Town Red,” has claimed eight Hot 100 No. 1s, which have reigned in five distinct decades: 60s, 70s, 80s, 2000s and ‘20s.

Bryan and Kacey Musgraves’ “I Remember Everything” slips to No. 2 after leading the list in the last week and Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” is at No. 3 after spending eight weeks at No. 2 high. Swift’s “Cruel Summer” lifts one slot up to No. 4; Wallen’s “Last Night” is at No. 5; Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” enters a new peak at No. 6; SZA’s “Snooze” is No. 7; and Gunna’s “Fukumean” is at No. 8.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” will appear in the new version of the charts in the coming week and is anticipated to cause a few shifts in the top of both the albums and songs lists. Meanwhile, her former leader “Vampire” is at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rounding out the top 10 songs is Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down.”
